Imagine All the People

Imagine All the People

The older I get, the more I understand John Lennon’s song, Imagine.

There is a new treatment called Lipodissolve that’s supposed to literally melt fat away. The treatment is injected into the fatty spot and gets rid of the fat permanently. If this treatment becomes safe, successful and affordable, one day in the future it will allow anybody to get rid of fat, just like that. Last weekend, my friend and I were discussing the pros and cons of this in terms of society, and I said that I’m 100% for it. In fact, I’m 100% for anything that will make everybody as aesthetically beautiful as they want to be, especially if it’s cheap and quick and painless. My friend kinda looked at me like, “Huh?”, and I continued by saying, “Imagine everybody in the world looking beautiful, as absolutely, perfectly beautiful as possible, their bodies and faces flawless. Once we take care of that, it’ll be one less thing to worry about, and we can finally get on with other things, like figuring out how to solve bigger issues, like the planet.”

How about going beyond personal beauty? After we take care of everyone’s looks, what if somebody invented a machine that could make any kind of inanimate object by recombining atoms? Like what they use in Star Trek, where you can whip up a hot cup of Earl Grey tea just like that. What if this machine was super cheap so that anybody could have one? What if every “cool” thing you can think of can be created immediately, for free?

What will we do when fat and cosmetic surgery isn’t an issue anymore? What will we do when acquiring things isn’t an issue anymore? What will concern our minds then?

Why doesn’t it concern our minds now?
